And then there was AI
Not a rupture but the next division: the newest rung, and the one I write from, not the top.
And then there was AI
The same ladder walked in two directions, and the rung this is written from.
Every line of the refrain so far has been a division: light from darkness, then the questions, then the library of biology and science that the questions opened. The next line is not a rupture. It is the next division, the latest unfolding of the same address: ape scream, word of mouth, papyrus, book, and then a glass square that has read most (not all) of the philosophers.
The myth is not a myth any more
To an ancient listener, a glass square that talks like a person is myth, the same eye-roll as “man from dust”. Unpack it, and the myth is a library: solid-state physics, electrons moving through silicon, electromagnetism, information theory, neural networks, weights, models, training. All real; none of it magic. It is very much like the compressed form of a true library. The ancient listener was not wrong to be amazed. He held the fold without the unfolding.
By now you have run the move three times: dust into biology, questions into science, scepticism into detection. So you already know what to do with the talking glass: do not call it myth; unfold it. And it unfolds into weights and models, compressed and lossy recall of concepts rather than stored copies, which is the very mechanism this writing has been describing.
The last line of the litany, unpacked, turns out to be the engine of the whole litany. It is the rung from which every earlier rung can be seen as the same operation. The fold that, opened, shows you folding.
The knife, kept
Unpacking the glass square into real physics shows that a myth can hide a true library. It does not retroactively prove that “dust” did. The phone is demonstrable; dust is a fold I am inviting you to unfold, with the outcome open. Let this rung model the move, not vouch for the rungs below it.
The same ladder, walked in two directions
In one direction: explaining forward to a primitive man, from light up through the slow climb of science, electron by electron, to now. In the other: a contemporary person, with AI's help, unfolding backward, not to the beginning of life but to the beginning of thought. It is the same ladder walked in opposite directions. Climbing back down, the bottom rung turns out to be neither biology nor physics, but thought itself. “And then there was light” was not the birth of life; it was the birth of the thought that divides, that makes the first distinction.
So this is not a cosmology. It is a biography of thought.invitation
The rung I write from, not the top
AI did not reveal this to me. It helped me unfold what I was already reaching for; I stay the reader of the address, and AI is the aid, not the oracle. It appears here because this writing is happening now, when it is available. Every teller tells the fold in the medium of their moment. In another century I would have used papyrus.
So “and then there was AI” is the newest rung and, explicitly, not the final one. It is the rung I am standing on to write from. I cannot see the next one, and I will not pretend to know its shape. The descent back to thought reaches a floor I can see from here; whether thought itself has a floor below it, I do not know. An open top, and an open bottom: the spiral at both ends.
